Using the Bilkent Wireless Services:

  • Bilkent Wireless services are not public.
  • All Bilkent Wireless users MUST have a VPN (Virtual Private Network) account.
  • Bilkent Wireless services support the IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g standards.

Preparing to Use Bilkent Wireless Services:

  1. Install a wireless network adapter in your computer. Many contemporary portable computers will have a factory installed Wireless Ethernet adapter (Wi-Fi Adapter). Make sure that the software drivers for your wireless adapter is(are) installed properly and the adapter is functioning properly. Many Wireless Adapters need to be "turned on" or "enabled" by a switch located somewhere on the computer.

Driver software installation differs widely with the manufacturer but usually once the installation is complete, the wireless adapter should work without making any special settings

  2. Open a VPN account for yourself before using the services for the first time.

UG (Undergrad students) account holders should use the service at http://vpn.ug.bilkent.edu.tr to open and manage their VPN accounts. You will need your student ID number and BAIS-STD password to open a student VPN account.

  3. Staff and faculty account holders should use the service at http://vpn.bcc.bilkent.edu.tr to open and manage their VPN accounts. You will need your BAIS-ID and BAIS password to open a BCC VPN account.

  4. Once you have your VPN account and its password, you should install a VPN client on your computer.

Acquiring and installing VPN client software varies from one operating system to another; but a general guideline for VPN client installations on some OS's can be found at http://vpn.ug.bilkent.edu.tri/clients.html.

Using Bilkent Wireless Services:
  1. Establish a wireless connection with a wireless access point serving your surroundings. Please note that your wireless adapter might find more than one wireless service ("SID" in tech terms). Bilkent University SIDs will start with "bilkent" and end with some other postfix which will symbolise your location. e.g. "bilkent-103".

Monitor the reception quality with the software tools provided by the manufacturer. If you have poor reception; moving around, avoiding walls and large green trees might improve reception quality.

  2. Once you are connected to a Bilkent Wireless Network start your VPN client software and logon to the service using your VPN userID and VPN password.

  3. Test your VPN connection by trying to access a web site outside Bilkent; e.g. www.google.com.

  4. Please note that you will not be able to access the Internet and most of the Bilkent network unless a proper VPN connection is established.

VPN Regulations:

  • VPN account owners are responsible for everything done through their VPN accounts. Bilkent VPN account owners are expected to protect their userIDs and passwords carefully.

  • Please note that Bilkent VPN Services are strictly for academic purposes and are strictly for the use of Bilkenters. BCC will immediately disable VPN accounts, without any notice, when a non-academic and/or abusive and/or unauthorized traffic is detected over a VPN connection.

Please note that sharing/downloading/uploading files for entertainment purposes is regarded as "non-academic use".

  • Computers which inject viruses, worms or other intrusive traffic will be disconnected and the associated VPN accounts will disabled.
